How do we know that the girls who are accusing others of witchcraft are, in fact, faking? How does Arthur Miller use characterization (as opposed to his notes in the text) to show us that the girls are using the hysteria for their own purposes?

Well Abigail dose't like Elisabeth and she want her gone so she can have john to her self because they had sex together. When she says mean things about her. that tells me that she could be a witch her self Abigail and it makes scene to blame it on some one else for what youved done

I agree that Abigail could obviously be blaming Elizabeth because she wants to have Proctor to herself.

I agree with the fact that maybe Abigail wants proctor to herself so she accused her of witch craft

The reason i know that they are in fact faking is because they wouldn't want to be hung, the girls don't want proctor to find out they they willingly did the witchcraft. the author uses hatred as something for the girl to accuse so say the girls don't like this one person so they say that she is doing witchcraft and they come up with as many reasons on how this is a case of witch craft.

Yes they don't want to get hung and Arthur Miller uses hatred, but I think he also uses jealously as shown in Abigail when she accuses John Proctor's wife Elizabeth because Abigail is in love with John.

We know the girls are falsely accusing others of witchcraft because they are covering up the time they danced in the woods with Tituba and conjured spirits and basically worshiped the devil. Abigail is the one who sparks all this by accusing people she doesn't like when before she tried to blame it all on Tituba and Tituba turned it around to all of them, so they made up lies about people working with the devil to posses them to make them conjure spirits. They start by blaming the people that everyone could agree without a fight because they are "lower class". But eventually they accuse Rebecca, the nurse and John Proctor's wife, Elizabeth.

I think that Abigail and Mary Warren teamed up to accuse Elizabeth Proctor of witchcraft. Abigail desires to continue her relationship with Proctor, but Elizabeth is standing between them. She uses Mary Warren to plant a "poppet" in Elizabeth's possession, then accuses her in court. With Elizabeth out of the way, Abigail can hope to continue her affair with John Proctor.

We know the girls are accusing the wrong people because every person they have accused they have a grudge against. For example Abigail has a grudge against John Proctors wife, because Abigail and John had an affair and he doesn't want to be with her. Abigail accused his wife of use a doll to stab her in the stomach with a needle. There is always a reason why the people wrongly accuse others, maybe its because they are with someone the accuser likes or they blame them because they dislike them. Each time one of the girls or one of the men accused someone of witchcraft hysteria was at play. Someone would act like they saw something in the woods, get cold, saw someone with a doll, or caught a disease hysteria was taking apart of it. Hysteria is an overwhelming fear and excitement that overrides all logic. Another action of hysteria would be when Tituba started naming people that may be witches. When the girls use hysteria they are using it towards someone that they don't really like and they use it to their own satisfaction.

I agree with you Haley. The girls are only accusing each other depending on if they like them or not.

Arthur Miller uses the girls characteristics and self esteem to manipulate each other so that situation or the "problem" is directed towards them. The girls overwhelming excitement of fear (or hysteria) takes over all logic and confidence, making the fear grow even stronger for the others. When Marry Warren speaks to the judge she confesses that, "I--I heard the other girls screaming, and you, Your Honor, you seemed to believe them, and I--It were only sport in the beginning sir, but then the whole world cried spirits, spirits, and I--I promise you, Mr. Danforth, I only thought I saw them but I did not.". When a misunderstood consumption turns into a rumor and eventually it spreads like a plague to the other people it creates a stronger fear that once started from a lie

That is a really great example Jesse. I think you make a great point as to why the girls are falsely accusing people because of their relationships that they have with them.

They are accusing each other of witchcraft because none of them want to face the consequences. Abigail wants to accuse Elizabeth because Abigail and John Proctor like each other. Nobody was going against Tituba until the consequences. I think that all the girls had a part in it they just don't want to be the ones that get hung for it. The girls are falsely accusing each other by how the relationship between them is. If one of the girls doesn't like the other then they will falsely accuse of that girl of witchcraft. No matter what nobody is going to confess it.

We know the girls are fastly accusing each other of witch craft for one they are trying to cover up the time they were dancing in the woods with Tituba and the conjuring spirits. They are also basically worshiping the devil. The girls don't want proctor to find out they willingly did the witchcraft. They all accuse each other of doing something such as the stabbing with needle and the poppets and all sorts of things. Also the cheating that they did and the affair that Abigail had with John Proctor. The girls are all just crazy in this story.

The girls are faking to keep themselves from getting hung. In this time in America, if you were caught practicing witchcraft, you were most likely put to the sentence of death. During the puritan phase, if you weren't of the Christian faith, you would be considered a ungodly person. On Sunday, the police would be searching the town for people who weren't in church. So its no wonder why the girls are lying in this situation, they don't want to be killed. There's a reason why the Salem witch trials are well known, and its not for the equal treatment or freedom of religion.

I think that the girls held blame against others because of what they have against them. The ones that have gone against the girls are turning on them because they either have a lower view from people, or have done something to discourage those who accuse them.

I agree Umphy on what you are trying to say, the girls are accusing each other because they did something they didn't like. Just like what Haley said "When the girls use hysteria they are using it towards someone that they don't really like and they use it to their own satisfaction" But at the same time I am confused. When you said the reason that they blamed each other was "they either have a lower view from people", did the people already have a lower perspective of them? Or is it because when they blamed each other did it create that feeling first?
